Some years ago I taught ‘Night’ and used books by Frankl as well. There is no doubt that the one things survivors clung to was hope. Darryl’s oncologist knew the power of hope. At his last appointment it was clear to Doig that Darryl was declining rapidly. Yet he said he would see him in three weeks. Darryl died a week later without having had hope taken from him.
